When we are learning to memorise facts, we should also be able to show or explain how they work, in order to apply them. Each term all students from all classes do our Ngatimoti Basic Facts test. Results are kept by teachers, but they are also used by teachers and students to determine 'next steps' for learning. These tests were devised straight from the expectations of the Numeracy Project. If you have not seen a basic facts test, you should come in to see one, so you are aware of the expectations.
Each term as well, all students from Year 3 to Year 8 do the IKAN (Individual Knowledge Assessment of Number) test. This comes directly from the Numeracy Project and is a powerpoint of quickfire questions.
These two assessments form the basis of teaching and learning of basic facts. Importantly, they do not dominate the whole maths programme!
